[912] He met and became friends with George Washington when he was 17. Heaccompanied General Braddock in his ill-fated campaign against FortDuquesne in 1755. In 1773 Gov. Penn appointed him presiding justice ofWestmoreland Co., PA, then a county covering all of western PA. On 14Aug 1776 he was commissioned a colonel and put in charge of the 7thRegiment Virginia Battalions. He participated in many major battlesand was with Washington when the Continental Army crossed the Delawareon Christmas Day, 1777 to defeat the Hessians encamped at Trenton. Inthe spring of 1782 he led an expedition against the the SanduskyIndians who had been attacking settlers in the Yough Valley. He wascaptured by the Indians and burned at the stake. A statue at theConnellsville Library commemorates the bravery of this hero.

[16] During the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private on 1 June 1863 inCompany A, 1st West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. He serveduntil 15 July 1865 when he was mustered out with his regiment atWheeling, WV. Joseph served with Alexander J. SWANEY in the samecompany. It is likely that Alexander introduced his daughter, SaraEllen SWANEY, to Joseph's son, James Marshall LEWIS, resulting intheir marriage. He was killed by a passenger train at Continental No.1 near Uniontown, PA, while on the way home from work.
[21] He is buried in the White Rock Cemetery where his grave is maintainedby the Grand Army of the Republic in honor of his service in the CivilWar.
